There’s a moment in rugby that has nothing to do with a try, a tackle, or a final score.
It’s the moment when you realize the game has quietly shaped your life — your friendships, your values, your sense of belonging. For many of us, that’s the real gift rugby gives back.
This holiday season, we were grateful to witness that gift in its purest form.
We joined a men’s rugby team from Toronto on a visit to Safehaven, a community that supports children and youth with complex medical needs. What unfolded over the course of a day wasn’t a lesson or a performance. It was something simpler, and far more meaningful: connection.
The players came not knowing exactly what to expect. How to act. How to help. How to make sure they were doing the right thing. But rugby has a way of removing that uncertainty. Put a ball in the middle, slow things down, meet people where they are — and suddenly you’re speaking the same language.
There were crafts and baking. Gentle games of catch. Quiet moments. Laughter that arrived unexpectedly. A child who seemed shy at first, unsure if he wanted to join in — until the ball moved his way. A pass, sharp and accurate. A smile. Then another.
That’s rugby too.
The values that sit at the heart of the game - respect, camaraderie, humility, care and those don’t disappear when the boots come off. Giving back isn’t something rugby teaches loudly. It shows you instead, through moments like these.
For many players, rugby has been the doorway to community — especially when arriving somewhere new. A new country. A new city. A new chapter. The game has a way of turning strangers into teammates, and teammates into lifelong friends. That sense of belonging doesn’t fade when you step into a place like Safehaven. If anything, it deepens.
Watching this team lean into choosing to spend a holiday visit giving their time, attention, and care reminded us why the game matters so much to so many. Rugby breeds good people because it asks you to show up fully. For your teammates. For your community. For moments that don’t come with recognition or reward.
Just shared humanity.
We’re grateful to Safehaven for welcoming us, and for the work they do every day to create a place built on dignity, compassion, and joy. The values of rugby and the values of Safehaven aligned effortlessly.
To everyone in the Land of Rugby, we wish you a warm and meaningful holiday season.
